Gun Dealers

Their Own Worst Enemy

In today’s high-tech world, it is amazing how many gun show dealers still do things the old-fashioned way. As FFLAssist was being beta tested, I walked around gun shows and asked these dealers how they “settled up” the weekend’s gun show results.

Way too many dealers wait until they are back at their brick-and-mortar stores on Mondays following gun shows to remove sold guns from inventory and record sales revenue. So, I would ask them, “If I can show you a way how FFLAssist immediately records revenue on a gun sale, which is known as soon as the customer’s credit card is approved, would this be of interest to you?” Some were intrigued and open-minded, most were not, and are happy with the status quo.

Having been for the past 26 years, and still am, a Microsoft consultant, I look for and recommend “best practices” to my clients, business practices that give the business owners the biggest return on their investment, either in the software they purchase or in the fees they pay me. In short, I find ways to either lower business expenses, increase business revenue, or streamline business processes. That is how I designed FFLAssist!

Here is another example. Suppose you get a Trace request. How long does it take you to trace a firearm you handled? If I can show you how FFLAssist handles that same request in seconds, would this be of interest to you?

Here is a third example, specifically for Pennsylvania dealers. When you sell a handgun in Pennsylvania to a Pennsylvania customer, you have to also complete the PA State Police Sales Tax form “SP4-113” and the Summary form “SP4-134”. What if FFLAssist can autogenerate the SP4-113 form for you, except for the customer’s signature? Would this be of interest to you? Then, after every two weeks, you need to submit form SP4-134 listing all the background checks you did for the previous two weeks. Again, if FFLAssist can autogenerate that summary form for you, so that all you have to do is print it, then mail it. You won’t even have to sign it because your signature is auto-completed. Would this be of interest to you?

And finally, here is a fourth example. Let’s suppose you are a dealer who is on the ball with regards to direct marketing to your customers. You understand how to use MailChimp, Constant Contact, or other well-known CRM applications. Let’s say you specialize in Glocks. Then, once a year, you have an autumn marketing campaign called “Glocktoberfest,” in which you direct email/snail mail your Glock customers that Glock holsters, carrying cases, magazines, etc., are on sale. How do you go about getting those customer email addresses into your CRM system? Does one of your staff members have to go through every 4473 to gather names and addresses of Glock gun buyers? Or do you have an OCR (optical character recognition) scanner that reads customers’ written answers from the 4473s and converts them into electronic text? Either method is a pain-in-the-ass. What if the customer’s penmanship sucks because they are filling out Section B on a paper copy? But by using FFLAssist’s 4473 Section B wizard, your customer is adding their contact information for you. They have to add their address, their birth date, their height, etc., in the top portion of Section B. THEY are adding to your CRM record, not you, and not a member of your staff, and not via an OCR scanner. And the penmanship is crystal clear. So, if you sell 25 Glocks at a weekend gun show, you now have 25 new CRM entries without ever typing anything into the system yourself. Would this be of interest to you?
