So, you want to add miscellaneous fees as a part of each firearm sale.
Can your existing system do that easily? With FFLAssist, this is second nature. The hardest part for you, as a dealer, is deciding on what you want to charge your customers for. Your imagination is the only limiting factor. But to give you some idea of what is being discussed here, below is a small list of typical or more common fees that come delivered with FFLAssist that dealers charge customers.
- Background Check Fee (pass or fail)
- Denial Fee
- Freight Out
- Shipping & Handling
- Storage Fee (for customers using you as a GunBroker transfer agent)
- Credit Card Fee
- Return Stocking Fee
- DROS Fees (CA Dealers Only)
- Gunsmithing Fees (if you do gunsmithing as well as retail sales)
- Gun Rental Fee (for range operators who rent guns)
- Lane Usage Fee (for range operators)
And yes, the last two examples are for gun ranges, the functionality of which is also built into FFLAssist, which is especially useful for those retail dealers who also have a gun range.
These fees are considered “Resources” within FFLAssist. There are two types of master records that you can sell. One is “Item SKUs,” i.e., guns, ammo, holsters, etc. The other is “Resources”, such as the list above. Item SKUs are tangible in that you can touch them, stock them, and count them. Resources are intangible, in that you cannot touch, stock, or count them.
Each Resource master record, like the list above, is set up once and then pulled into each sales invoice as needed. If you want to charge a customer for running their background check, you pull that resource into the sales invoice; otherwise, you simply omit it.
You can be as summarized or as detailed as you like. For example, you can have two Shipping and Handling Fees, one for UPS and one for FedEx, if that makes it easier for you to match the fee revenue against each shipper’s invoice.
Each Resource can have its own Unit Price. For example, you may assign a Unit Price of $35 for UPS and $25 for FedEx. And if the Unit Prices can vary invoice by invoice, you can simply leave the Unit Price field blank and fill in the Unit Price when each sales invoice is created. So, let’s say your best customer buys a gun. You may charge that person $5 for the Background Check Fee and charge every other customer $35 for a background check.
So, you have complete flexibility to generate additional revenue other than the pure profit margin of selling guns.
