Plustek MobileOffice D620 ID Scanner

One of the ways gun dealers fail ATF audits is when the gun buyer’s photo ID, generally a driver’s license, does not match what the buyer entered in Section B of the 4473. And, as you know, there is a place in Section C, where the dealer’s responsible person verifies the ID, signs their name attesting that the information matches. But what if it doesn’t? What if you are working a gun show, and you have three gun buyers at your booth simultaneously? Can mismatched identification occur?  Sure.

But there is a solution that prevents this misidentification from ever happening. It involves using the Plustek MobileOffice D620 Scanner with iKnow. The D620 scanner is an ID scanner that captures the front and back of gun buyers’ photo IDs, and “iKnow” is the brand name of the software installed on your computer, which captures information from the magnetic strip on the reverse side of driver’s licenses when the D620 scans them.

The FFLAssist team chose this scanner for five (5) reasons:

  1. Price – coming in at just under $350
  2. Reliability – High-quality scanner with user-configurable software
  3. Availability – Can be purchased from numerous online stores
  4. Portable – Easy to take to gun shows
  5. Upload Capable – Only ID scanner on the market that uploads photo ID data

How exactly does that happen? When you insert a driver’s license into the Plustek scanner, the scanner captures two pieces of information. First, it simultaneously captures the front and back images of the buyer’s driver’s license (very few ID scanners scan both sides at once); second, the “iKnow” software captures the information on the magnetic strip on the reverse of the license. When you save the captured data, the Plustek scanner creates two files: a JPG file for the driver’s license image and a CSV file of the magnetic strip data.

Then, on the 4473, you run a small function which uploads and verifies the information contained on the magnetic strip of the buyer’s ID, then compare that data to what the buyer entered in Section B. Mismatched data is kicked out, forcing the 4473 to not certify, and you are not able to sell a firearm to the intended buyer. So, by using this scanner and the associated scanning software, you will always be ATF-audit ready.
